Blue Cross Personalized Medicine Program℠
is offering OneOme’s RightMed® Test.

The Blue Cross Personalized Medicine Program may help you find the right medications for you, based on your genetics.

1

Request Your Test

If you’ve received an invitation letter, email, call or text from Blue Cross Personalized Medicine Program, you can now request your RightMed genetic test (shipped to your home) and get started making your medications more personal.

2

The RightMed Test

When your test arrives in a recyclable envelope, you’ll follow the instructions to collect your sample through a simple cheek swab.

Then, register for your account, activate your test kit and mail it back to the lab using the pre-paid mailing label.

3

Consult your Doctor

Your RightMed results are delivered to your account, and shared with your doctor, interpreted by a Genome Medical pharmacist. Don’t stop taking your medications or change any doses without talking with your doctor.  Your results are not shared with Blue Care Network.

How to talk to your doctor about your RightMed test.

Like any laboratory test – your RightMed PGx test results are best interpreted by your healthcare provider or pharmacist. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist can assess your results to help you decide which medications are most likely to work for you.

Please don’t make any changes to your medications without talking to your provider first.

Benefits of the RightMed test:

  • May help find the best medication for you earlier in treatment.

  • May reduce medication related side effects.

  • May save you time and money.

  • May provide years of informed medication decisions.

The right medications.

Right for you.

Your genes play a role…

Did you know that medications work differently for different people? Your genes can play a role in how you respond to some medications. Your body may process medications too slowly or too quickly, which may cause side effects or reduce effectiveness. The science that looks at medication and DNA interactions is called Pharmacogenomics and shortened to PGx.

The RightMed® PGx test, created by OneOme® (co-founded by Mayo Clinic) is available at no cost to you* through the Blue Cross Personalized Medicine program. This simple cheek swab kit is sent to your home – and the results can help you and your health care provider learn how you may respond to certain medications.

This information may help your health care provider:

  • Find medications that are less likely to cause you negative side effects
  • Prescribe the right medication for you earlier in your treatment
  • Tailor your treatments for years to come

Selection for RightMed test:

You may be wondering why you were selected to receive the RightMed test at no cost.* Some commonly prescribed medications (for everything from heartburn, to cardiology, to mental health) have PGx guidelines from the FDA. If you have taken one of those medications in the past 12 months, or if you meet other medication history criteria, you may have been found eligible for this no-cost test.

Common Genetic Testing Questions:

Will you share my results with my employer? My health plan?

No. Your results are shared only with you, your doctor and a DNA Visit pharmacist specialized in understanding how genes influence the body’s response to certain medications.
If you’d like to share them with other members of your care team down the road, you can. Your DNA doesn’t change, so your results continue to be valuable for future use.

Will my test results tell me exactly what to do?

No. Your results are one important source of information for you and your care team to consider, along with your medical history and other clinical factors. Many things influence how your medications perform and test results are not a guarantee.

Can the results be used to identify me, track me or connect to any other registry/database (paternity, crime, 23&Me?)

No. Your results are shared with you and your doctor. We do not sell or share your results with BCBSM, government agencies, or anyone else. The RightMed test covers 27 genes and more than 100 alleles focused on those proven to impact how you respond to medications. It does not cover your complete genome, look for things like disease risk, or hereditary genetic disorders.

Will my information be kept forever? What if it’s stolen?

Your test sample is held onsite for 60 days, after which it is destroyed. Your test results are handled and stored with utmost security to meet or exceed strict requirements outlined in the Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility Act (HIPAA) and applicable state law requirements.

My medications are working fine – can the RightMed test still help me?

Yes! Your DNA doesn’t change – so your results will be valuable in informing new prescriptions you may need down the road. Enrolling in the program now will ensure your results are ready when you need them, so your treatment can begin more quickly.
